Albannaich - James Penny

The story is told through the lives of ordinary men and women caught up in the warfare, intrigues and machinations of the High Kings of Alba, the name for Scotland in that period of it's history. They are the Albannaich of the title. The first chapters relate how the main characters meet and develop a close friendship serving as household warriors to a Lord. Then, through circumstance, their lives become entwined with those of the historical characters. Serving in the household of Malcolm the Second they incur the enmity of his grandson Duncan. With Malcolm's death, and Duncan acclaimed High King, they are forced to flee to Duncan's rival, Macbeth, and seek his protection. With him, they witness and take part in, the final overthrow of Duncan.
